F. A. Q.

Do you only guide fly fishing trips?

No! While I am passionate about fly fishing, I am happy to guide anglers to a great experience targeting redfish, and other residents of the Louisiana marsh using light spinning and casting tackle. I am able to provide all spinning and casting tackle and lures, as well as fly tackle and flies included in the daily charter rates.

*What do I need to bring?

Flyfishing - 9ft 7 or 8wt rod with weight forward floating line.  7 to 9 foot leaders with 10 to 15 pound tippet.

Casting/Spinning - 6 to 7ft medium casting rods, or 6ft medium-light spinning rods.  10 to 12lb test mono.

Valid Louisiana basic resident, and saltwater fishing license (a daily charter guest license is available for non residents) polarized sunglasses, hat, raingear, non marking shoes, camera, bug spray and sunscreen.

How far do I need to be able to flycast?

While fish are often caught within close range, and even at the boat, it is axiomatic that an angler who can cast accurately at a greater distance will have more opportunities, and catch more fish.  If you can fish effectively from 20 to 50 feet in a variety of wind conditions, you should do quite well.  This is not to discourage the novice flats angler, as practice makes perfect, and fishing is fun practice.

What flies work well?

A variety of shrimp and crab patterns are effective.  I have also developed and provide patterns that are effective locally in a variety of conditions.

Are you convenient to the New Orleans area?

Lake Charles and the Calcasieu Estuary is about 26 miles from the Texas State line. While our fishery can be reached in two hours or less coming from Houston, we are over 3 hours away from New Orleans. Given that the world class fishing of the Mississippi Delta is availabe only 30 minutes south of New Orleans, I don't reccomend that anglers make the trip this way from New Orleans to fish. If you are planning a trip to the New Orleans area, drop me a line and I will be happy to reccomend one of the many excellent guides working in that area.

*I am happy to provide all tackle, flies and lures at no extra charge.
